Thari- The Loom, exploring the design and play of thread

Thari - the loom

Taneira presents ‘Thari- The Loom’, a fundraiser event to celebrate 20 years of DakshinaChitra on Friday, 3rd November 2017 at Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

‘Thari- The Loom’ is a group production exploring the design and play of thread. The concept & choreography is by Malavika Sarukkai, an exponent in Bharatanatyam, Indian Classical Dance.

‘Thari – The Loom’ explores the fundamental concepts that are shared between the two seemingly different but essentially connected disciplines of dance and weaving: space, structure, proportion, relationship, alignment, opposition, conjunction, symmetry, and motif. Interestingly, both disciplines work through coordination, rhythm, measurement, and design.

‘Thari – The Loom’ weaves together inputs from many artists. Sumantra Ghosal, Creative Collaborator, and filmmaker. His film, The Unseen Sequence made on the artistry of Malavika Sarukkai won critical acclaim in India and abroad. The dancers in the production are talented artist Jyotsna Jagannathan and Shruthipriya Ravi, Aditya PV, Shreema Upadhyaya and Nidhaga Karunad BM who represent some of the best talents of the next generation.

Commissioned music for the production is by India’s masterful senior dancer and music composer Prof.C. V. Chandrasekhar and Aditya Prakash, the young and immensely talented vocalist from Los Angeles. Gyandev Singh, one of Indias premier light designers has created the unique light design. Music Production and Sound Design is by India’s highly acclaimed musician and sound engineer Sai Shravanam.
