Village Festival at DakshinaChitra

Margazhi Village Festival, the month-long celebration organized by DakshinaChitra (Chennai, TamilNadu) in January 2018 presents a variety of folk performing arts from South India. The annual festival provides the visitors a unique opportunity to witness and enjoy the colorful folk dances.

The festival begins with Thira and Poothan, the folk art from Kerala. Thira and Poothan will be presented by Raman Smaraka Thira Poothan Kali Sangam from 03rd to 07th January.



Pongal Festival from Tamil Nadu will be conducted from 10th to 16th January.  Tamilnadu folk – Mayillattam, Karagattam and Poikal Kuthirai will be presented on these days by Thangai G Raju and troupe.

Daiah Janapada Kalavidaru from Karnataka will perform Pattada Kunitha, the colorful art of Karnataka, from 17th to 21st January. Performers use colorfully decorated bamboo poles in this dance form.

Dappu dance, the folk dance from AndhraPradesh will be conducted from 24th to 28th Jan. Dappu dance is a colourful folk art accompanied by the percussion instrument, Dappu.  Dappu dance is presented at DakshinaChitra Village Festival by Shri Bharathi Kala Samithi from Andra Pradesh.
